SUMMARY OF THE ITS POLSKA SEMINAR
"The expansion of the tram network in Poland in connection with intelligent transport systems on the example of investment in Grudziądz"

Nearly 90 people (representatives of government institutions, local government units, including municipal ones, road managers, transport managers and representatives of the service sector, organizations, universities, research institutes, and the press) participated in a seminar entitled “The expansion of the tram network in Poland in connection with intelligent transport systems on the example of investment in Grudziądz," which was held on March 17, 2016 at the RAD Hotel in Grudziądz. The event was organized by ITS POLSKA and the Municipal Department of Communications in Grudziądz. The seminar was held under the patronage of the Mayor of Grudziądz − Robert Malinowski.

The event partner was the contractor Kolejowe Zakłady Łączności (Railway Communications Works) and the contents partners were companies Dilax, MCX Systems and Solaris. The media partners included: Raport Kolejowy (Railway Report) and Raport Tramwajowy (Tram Report), and portals www.przeglad-its.pl and www.edroga.pl.

During the seminar, participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the issues relating to the scope of expansion possibilities for the tram network in Poland in conjunction with ITS, with particular emphasis on the tram network, on-board solutions and fleet management, issues associated with ITS development and a fast tram affiliated with ITS. Moreover, the seminar agenda included presentations on the implementations of tram investment projects in Bydgoszcz, Olsztyn, Łódź, Gliwice, Toruń, Warsaw, Poznań and Wrocław, and other cities. The contents part of the seminar was divided into two panels, each of which ended with a discussion, with participants asking the speakers direct questions to the speakers.

The seminar was opened by Piotr Krukowski – a Member of the Board at ITS POLAND. Deputy Mayor Marek Sikora welcomed the participants on behalf of the Municipal Office in Grudziądz. The expansion of the tram network in Poland in connection with the intelligent transport systems on the example of investment in Grudziądz. "Grudziądz is the smallest city in Poland with a tram system, but also one of the first cities to introduce trams. We have already completed the modernization of the tram network, which was by far the hardest and most complicated investment executed in Grudziądz. So far, no investment of this scale has been executed in the area of the Old Town. I am glad that we used the opportunity to obtain external funding for this purpose and today our residents can take full advantage of the modernized tram network,” Deputy Mayor Marek Sikora said during his speech.

"The modernization is unique on the country scale, because no one had previously carried out such extensive repair of a tram. We have obtained an energy-efficient and passenger-friendly vehicle. At the same time, we have executed the investments related to ITS, including the creation of a dynamic passenger information system and the "green wave" system for trams, which allows to reduce the time of journey. In addition, a new building of the Traffic Supervision Headquarters has been erected," said Paweł Maniszewski, the President of the Municipal Department of Communications.

The cycle of talks presented during the first part of the seminar was started by Zygmunt Użdalewicz, who introduced the concept of the tram in the Old Town of Grudziądz. Later in the seminar, Krzysztof Wysocki, a representative of the general contractor KZŁ Bydgoszcz − presented KZŁ solutions for ITS systems and the smart city. Damian Iwanowicz from the University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz presented the benefits of the implementation of ITS in trams on the example of Bydgoszcz. The round of talks in the second part of the seminar was started by Dariusz Długaszek from Solaris, who presented systems and solutions used in Solaris trams. Tomasz Trzajna of KZŁ Bydgoszcz presented the functionality and technical solutions of the KOMTiS system which had been implemented in Grudziądz. Piotr Krukowski, a representative of ITS POLSKA analysed ticketing systems in the Polish public transport. The extension of the tram network in Poland in connection with the intelligent transport systems on the example of investment in Grudziądz. The series of speeches ended with presentations by companies Dilax and MCX Systems – content partners of the seminar. They related to the system of measurement and control of passenger streams and the functionality of a payment card or smartphone as alternatives to paper tickets. The last point of the content part of the seminar was the drawing of prizes among the participants. The prizes were sponsored by companies: KZŁ Bydgoszcz, DILAX, Solaris, Raport Kolejowy (Railway Report) and Raport Tramwajowy (Tram Report).

The culmination of the seminar was technical participants’ ride on a modernized Duewag tram and a visit to the tram depot and the Traffic Supervision Headquarters in Grudziądz. The representatives of KZŁ Bydgoszcz and the Municipal Department of Communications showed the seminar participants around the centre of Grudziądz, presented the functionality of the system and answered all the questions posed by the visitors.
